Explosion!

Dosbarth Mrs Curtis have been looking at explosions this week. We put vinegar and warm water in a bag and dropped bicarbonate of soda in and sealed the bag. We stood back and watched the bag explode!

Next lesson we will be turning this into a scientific investigation by changing the independent variable and measuring the dependent variable.

WW2 Cooking

Dosbarth Mrs Curtis and dosbarth Miss Powell are investigating how recipes had to be re-invented during World War 2, due to food shortages and rationing. Both classes discussed what types of food you could grow in your garden that could be added to cakes, instead of other hard to get ingredients. We decided that if you could put carrots in a cake, then maybe you could use other vegetables too.

This week we have made beetroot chocolate cake.

We were all a bit put off by the thought of beetroot in cakes. However once we tasted them, we discovered they were delicious!

We have all made a WW2 recipe book that we will add a new recipe to each week.

I wonder what next weeks recipe will be?

Draw with Rob

For our art lesson this week, dosbarth Mrs Curtis introduced dosbarth Miss Powell to “Draw with Rob”. We followed Rob Biddulph’s step by step video of how to draw a stegosaurus called ‘Gregosaurus’.

Dosbarth Mrs Curtis, then picked another animal to draw.

Gwaith anhygoel pawb.

Hay Festival

Dosbarth Mrs Curtis had a fantastic day at Hay Festival. We saw three authors, talk about their new books, then had the opportunity to meet them and get books signed.

First we saw Onjail Q Rauf, talk about her new book: The lion above the door.

Next we saw Rob Biddulph and his book Peanut Jones and the illustrated city. We all joined in with a draw with rob session, having a go at drawing Doodle the dog.

The last author we saw, was Emma Carroll talk about her new book: The week at world’s end.

Lego WeDo

Dosbarth Mrs Curtis have been using the Lego WeDo sets and app, to make Milo the Science Rover. We then added a motion sensor, that will be used to detect the presence of a corpse flower in the Indonesian rainforest.

Once our Science Rovers were built, we used the Lego WeDo app to program the rovers to stop and sound an alarm when it found the corpse flower.

Synnu

Dosbarth Mrs Curtis and dosbarth Miss Powell have been looking at Henri Rousseau, and his painting; Tiger in a tropical storm (Surprised).

We have been using this painting as inspiration, to produce our own ‘Synnu’ art work.

They all look amazing!

Size of Wales workshop

On Friday dosbarth Mrs Curtis and dosbarth Miss Powell took part in a rainforest workshop from Size of Wales. Size of Wales is a Welsh charity with a mission to sustain an area of tropical forest twice the size of Wales.

During our workshop we looked at the issues of deforestation, climate change and what we can do to help.

Chester Zoo

Dosbarth Mrs Curtis and dosbarth Miss Powell had a fantastic day out at Chester Zoo. Both classes took part in a Rainforest workshop, looking at how animals adapt to their habitats, deforestation and what we can do to protect the rainforest.

We saw lots of animals that we have been learning about in school from the Amazon and the Indonesian Rainforest.
